Private Residence

After spending three decades in a traditional suburban house, these clients began searching for a new type of home in which to enjoy their retirement years. Rather than downsize, they imagined a home that would be tailored to their next phase of life and offer a complete change of style. The couple identified an existing home with promise but also a densely-packed first floor footprint. As part of an ambitious renovation, every existing room was cleared away in order to reconfigure the interior. The end result is a gracious and free-flowing modern home. One of the most striking elements is the new sinuous, curving staircase. Spiraling to all three floors, the sculptural staircase gives both visitors and the owners a beautiful visual element for their eyes to land on. In the master bath a monolothic 15-foot floating countertop harmonizes with a spacious walk-in shower. The powder bath is even more dramatic, with a 5-foot statement chandelier dangling elegantly like a piece of jewelry from a soaring 12-foot ceiling.
