The Aviary

Aviary (avi·ary | \ ˈā-vē-ˌer-ē): a large cage, or a house or enclosure in which birds are kept.

Aviary is formed from the Latin word for bird, avis, and the ending -ary, meaning
“a place” (similar to the -arium in aquarium). Unlike birdcages, aviaries are large enough to allow the captive birds to fly, and they are often large enough for people to enter.

This one-of-a-kind wine cellar was conceived as a modern aviary. The temperature-controlled room is home to the owner’s collection of rare wines, as well as seven elegant bird sconces, perched at the center of the enclosure. The exterior of the glass structure is wrapped in ebony-stained wood slats, loosely spaced at the front, allowing a view into the aviary, with progressively tighter spacing wrapping around the structure. The entry door is deftly hidden within the solid slatting.

Once inside, a collection of forty bottles of wine can be immediately accessed, displayed in two columns that flank the glowing family of birds at the center of the aviary. A second hidden door inside the cellar can be opened to reveal storage for another thirty-six bottles, along with a lighted, tiered display for spirits and cocktail mixers.
